Less than two weeks ago, Southern California established itself as the country’s top team when it routed No. 5 Ohio State. Rekindling the magic of the glory years of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush was short-lived and its national championship hopes are in jeopardy.
Oregon State stunned the visiting Trojans, 27-21, Thursday night for the first jaw-dropping upset of the season. The Beavers (2-2) turned the national title race on its ear and the reverberations can be heard in Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Missouri.
The Trojans (2-1) could not find a way to stop the 5-foot-6 Oregon State tailback Jacquizz Rodgers, who carried the ball 37 times for 186 yards.
He joked in a postgame television interview that the Trojan defenders could not find him because he is a “little dude.”

UC brings in scaffolding as tree-sitting protest enters last act

BERKELEY -- Tensions were mounting this morning between UC Berkeley and the four remaining tree-sitters outside Memorial Stadium as the university began building scaffolding around the redwood tree where the protesters are perched, apparently in preparation for removing them.
About 200 people, some supporting the protesters and others watching out of curiosity, gathered on Piedmont Avenue to watch as the nearly 2-year-old standoff between the tree-sitters and university appeared to be nearing an end. Campus police arrested at least one supporter of the tree-sitters, as other protesters screamed, banged drums, held signs and burned sage.
UC Berkeley Police Chief Victoria Harrison and Assistant Chief Mitch Celaya were in a basket suspended from a crane about 80 feet above the ground around 10 a.m., trying one last time to talk the protesters into coming down. The tree-sitters were throwing objects at them.

The image was poignant.
There was UCLA quarterback Kevin Craft, surrounded by the media, talking about remaining calm. There, on the Rose Bowl's giant video screen, was Bruins Coach Rick Neuheisel being anything but sedate, whipping fans into a frenzy.
The reason for both photo ops could be seen in the faces of the Tennessee players as the 18th-ranked Volunteers trudged off the field following UCLA's 27-24 victory in overtime.
"Look at Coach Neuheisel," Craft said. "He's driving them nuts."
The emotion of the moment was oozing from Neuheisel, with a fireworks display as a backdrop, moments after Tennessee's Daniel Lincoln hooked a 34-yard field-goal attempt wide left. It gave Neuheisel his first victory as head coach of his alma mater, with a soda pop bath from players a gooey reminder of the sticky situation his team had survived.
Yet, the level pulse Craft displayed in describing the game in monotone voice was just as symbolic.
Through the first half, Craft would drop back to pass and the Volunteers band would cue up "Rocky Top." Four of his passes in the half were intercepted, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

How bad a weekend was it for the Atlantic Coast Conference?
Well, in terms of high-profile games, it was a disaster.
Virginia Tech started out Saturday by getting beaten by an East Carolina team that could be a sleeper as the season progresses.
The irony was that the Hokies' 27-22 loss came when East Carolina's T.J. Lee blocked a punt and returned it 27 yards for the winning touchdown with 1:52 left. Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer's teams have made a reputation winning via special teams plays.
"It hurts to lose on a blocked kick at the end," said Beamer, whose team had won 17 straight games in which it had blocked a kick.
