CLEMSON – Clemson University reached an agreement in principle Sunday to name Dabo Swinney the 25th head football coach at Clemson University.

An announcement is expected in the next couple of days.

Swinney, 39, was selected after athletic director Terry Don Phillips conducted a national search that began within days of Tommy Bowden’s resignation Oct. 13.

Hired by Bowden in 2003 to coach receivers, Swinney was promoted last year to assistant head coach when University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban attempted to bring him back to his alma mater, where he lettered three seasons and served as an assistant.

After being named interim head coach, Swinney galvanized a fractured team by challenging players to "go all in" and encouraging the fan base to embrace the team despite its disappointing start.

Consensus favorites to win the ACC championship and preseason No. 9 in the national polls, the Tigers lost their first game to Alabama and had a 3-3 record when Bowden stepped down.
